Growing Pains

Stepping away from my typical approach of acrylic and oil on canvas, I wanted to strip this chapter back and return to something more raw…drawing.

There comes a point when every kid learns the world is bigger than the one they imagined.

Growing Pains, Chapter XIV of West of Everything, captures that moment through the surreal image of a young cowboy reaching upward to wipe away a tear larger than himself.

Small against the enormous eye above him, he does what cowboys are taught to do…stand tall, lend a hand, and keep going. But beneath the Western imagery is something much more human: the transition from innocence to experience, and the realization that strength doesn’t always mean being untouched by pain.

Sometimes it means learning how to carry it.

Growing Pains is about childhood, resilience, vulnerability, and all the lessons that come somewhere between who we were and who we’re becoming.
